Father and Son

It happened again,

For the nth time?

Probably.

Who knows?

I stopped counting.

Dad, with his uncontrollable rage,

Struck me.

With nowhere to hide,

Immediately felt a heavy slap across my face,

I almost lost balance.

Stumbling,

Found my back against the wall.

He shook me violently,

Felt like rubber.

Hit my head on the hard surface,

Nearly made me sick.

Ears were ringing,

As hearing was momentarily impaired,

I sensed my upper lip split open,

Felt a razor-sharp sting pulsating,

Drops of blood and saliva trickled to the floor.

I was stunned to silence.

Thoughts revolving, but suppressed

Wanted to tell him,

I have no interest,

In sports, leather, motorcycles

Gulping beer in a pub,

Tuesday night Poker games,

Smoking Cuban cigars,

Women dancing on ledges,

Or other manly distractions,

But,

My mouth was paralyzed.

He wants me to be just like him,

Macho, tattooed, athletic

Commanding authority,

Serving as head of the family,

Not so,

I inherited a lot more from my mother.

She is complacent, submissive, and sometimes timid,

An untrained culinary master,

Spending a lot of time in the kitchen,

Concocting her own recipes and love potions,

With the intention of passing them down to her children,

A bit vain, putting on rouge without occasion,

She walks tip-toed like a ballerina.

We share these feminine, gentle hands,

With long candle like fingers,

Possessing a natural affinity to blossoming flowers.

Yes,

This will happen again and again.

For how long?

Who knows?

No one?

Anyone?

Maybe until he tires,

Or

Until I die,

Or

Until I move out,

And settle in my own place,

Maybe then I would be released,

To sow my own garden.
